All programs will start on the northwest side of Decker Lake, located on Parkway BLVD. in West Valley City, across the street from Franklin Covey Headquarters, north of the West Valley E-Center, and just to the east side of I-215. Best ways to get to meeting site are:
1. From Bangerter Highway, go east on Parkway Blvd. (2700 South) to the base of the I-215 overpass, on the northwest corner of Decker Lake. Park along the shoulder.
2. From Redwood Road, go to Parkway Blvd (2495 South). Go west at signal light, as road winds and curves, past UPS, and to the base of the I-215 overpass. Park on south side of street shoulder, next to lake.
Birdwatching hike at Decker Lake. Meet with Naturalist at northwest corner by 8 am to discover what birds can be seen at Decker Lake. Bring binoculars, appropriate layered clothing, drinking water. This is for any level of interest in bird-watching, from brand new to seasoned expert. With migration in full-swing, we are seeing new and different birds nearly each time we go out, as well as courtship and nesting behavior for our increasing number of resident birds. Learn about the ecology of playa lakes and muddy flats life zones. Hike is leisurely, and usually lasts 1.5 to 2 hours. Call Brenda at 957-0608 for questions or reservations.
Mini-Earth Day Celebration:
8 am: Birdwatching hike at Decker Lake. Hike is leisurely, and will probably last 1.5 hours. Call Brenda at 957-0608 for questions or reservations.
9 am to Noon: We will have guest speakers from the Recycling Office and UTA at the lake between 10 and noon. We will also be sponsoring a clean-up around Decker Lake, so bring gloves, long pants and sleeves, rakes, shovels, hats, sun screen, drinking water, snacks, garbage bags, and let’s get the edges of the lake, as well as the surrounding park area picked up and cleaned up, ready for visitors! We are looking for as many volunteers as we can get to help us with this project!! To sign up, or get answers to questions, call Brenda at 957-0608.
Join the Decker Lake Wetlands Preserve Foundation as we join with the Utah Society for Environmental Education at their huge annual Earth Day Celebration at Gardner Village, between 10 am and 6 pm. We will have lots of activities to participate in, including watershed demonstrations, water quality testing, water conservation, and more. Be sure to stop by our table to say hi and sign up for your membership with the foundation.
STARTING WITH: Breakfast with the Birds! At a new time: 7 am. We will continue with our tradition of bird-watching hikes at a new, earlier time. Please make your reservations early, as we will be supplying OJ and a bagel with our hike, so there will be a small fee for this activity, with a discount for DLWPF members. Call Brenda at 957-0608 for your reservations.
FROM 9 am to NOON: Following the bird-watching hike we will have other fun activities dealing with birds. We have invited guests from Hawkwatch International, Tracy Aviary, Wildlife Programs, Inc. and Owen Hogle of the Wild Bird Center will be offering a workshop for kids to build a bird feeder they can take home with them at 10 am, for a cost of $10 each person, which includes the feeder, a bag of seed for it, and a bird identification poster for each child. Proceeds of the workshop will be donated to the Decker Lake Wetlands Preserve Foundation! You will have a chance to see the birds at the lake, learn about migration patterns and where the birds go when they fly away from Decker Lake, learn about the Remarkable Raptors, and to meet some live birds that day. To volunteer, for questions, or for reservations, please call Brenda at 957-0608.
To celebrate flight, bring your favorite kite along, and join in our kite flying activity at NOON. Let’s see how many kites we can get up into the air over Decker Lake at the same time! Who will fly theirs the highest, who will have the fanciest, or the biggest? Bring your picnic lunch and a blanket and join in on the fun! There will be a $1 charge for non-Foundation members to participate.
9am to Noon: Join us as we participate in a state wide celebration of wetlands here in Utah. We will offer a nature hike for any age at 10 am, exploring the ecology of Decker Lake, looking at flora and fauna (plants and animals) and how they all work together to form a wetland ecosystem. There will be a variety of activities, including a wetland food web game, and others, as well as opportunities to learn about watersheds, landfill management practices, water conservation, and you can even do some water quality sampling at Decker Lake as part of our Adopt-A- Waterbody Program.
AT NOON: Puppet Show by Wildlife Programs, Inc.: The Mystery of the Muddy Flats! Bring your picnic lunch and drinks, and a blanket or lawn chairs, and enjoy a puppet show for the family. Find out what the MYSTERY is all about.
