The History of Cirris

In 1984, the first Apple Macintosh went on sale, IBM introduced it's AT computer, the first CD player became available, and Cirris Systems Corp. introduced its first cable tester, the Signature 1000. For those that are curious, here is a brief history of how Cirris has developed and grown.
Cirris 25th anniversary was recently featured in an article published in Wiring Harness News, to read the entire article click here.

In the Beginning

In 1983 Marlin Shelley was a key engineer and co-owner of one of the earliest dot-matrix printer companies. Marlin was often frustrated by printer troubles that were caused by bad cables. Existing cable testers were slow, expensive, and let errors slip through to the customer.

Marlin's engineering mindset left him wondering if there was a better way to test cables. In a friend's electronics lab in a small office in a quiet Salt Lake City neighborhood Marlin worked early mornings, late evenings, and weekends developing a new kind of cable tester. His goals were to create a tester that was easy to use, fast, and as reliable as possible.

While Marlin worked long hours on the science behind fast, accurate cable testing, he also worked to remove the common pit-falls found in the entire cable testing process. Easily changeable adapters, adapter "Signatures," and "Test Signatures" all helped Marlin to create a reliable cable test system that met his goal of "a tester my Mom could use."

By early 1984 Marlin had created the Signature 1000 and started Cirris Systems Corporation. Right from the start all the Cirris employees worked to create a company that values treating customers and employees with respect. The fact that three of the four original employees are still with Cirris (the forth having retired) and that the average tenure of current employees is nearly 15 years says a lot about these values.

Cirris quickly moved to a more central Salt Lake location, an old school converted into office suites, and set about working directly with people who build and test cables. With help from those early customers new products were developed. The Signature 2000, the 1000M, and the Signature 5000 became the core products of those early years.

In 1988 Cirris ventured into the high voltage cable testing market with the introduction of the Signature 1000H. Today's core products are the Signature 1100 and Touch 1 series, along with the easy-wire CR and CH2. In addition, Pin-Sight, a revolutionary new guided- pinning tool, was recently introduced. Cirris now offers one of the broadest product lines in the world of cable and harness testing, having placed over 30,000 cable and harness testers with over 7,000 customers throughout the world.

Why does Cirris' 25 years in business matter to you?

This celebration is not about us, but about our many dedicated customers. Below are 10 reasons why Cirris customers can be happy that Cirris started a business 25 years ago:

1. Easy to use, cable and harness testers at reasonable prices.
2. A host of standard adapters to simplify the interfacing between the cable tester and the DUT.
3. The introduction of the Signature concept to allow quick verification that the tester is programmed correctly.
4. Inexpensive, easy to use, bench-top high-voltage testing which radically lowered the cost to do high voltage testing.
5. FREE demo machines for customers to use on their production floor to determine if the tester would make a difference to their production goals. Also overnight availability of these demo machines when a loaner is needed.
6. Unparelled customer service. Live telephone support, 24 hr emergency phone support,
7. Innovative technical advances: High speed testing algorithms, pushing test as far "up-stream" as possible with guided-build-as-you-test capabilities.
8. Steady, informed support no matter what the technical issue.
9. Long term relationships with customers: Average tenure of Cirris salespeople is 18 years!
10. Innovative responses to customer technical needs.

Cirris looks back on these past 25 years with fondness and a great appreciation for the privilege of serving you in the cable/harness industry. We look forward to the next 25 years!
