Cirris Systems Corp, Salt Lake City, UT announces the purchase of OmniTester Corp. of Westampton, NJ. Both Cirris and OmniTester manufacture cable, harness and backplane testers used by electronic manufacturing companies worldwide. 'We have known Omni as a respected competitor for the 22 years we've been in this industry' stated Marlin Shelley, President of Cirris. 'When we heard of their decision to cease operations we felt that acquiring them made sense, both for us and for their customers.' Brent Stringham, Cirris' director of sales, stated 'although we won't be building or selling any new Omni testers, we will service existing products where we can, and will provide a transition path for Omni's customers into new Cirris products, possibly even offering trade-in value on old Omni units'.
As part of the transaction Ray Mumma, sales manager at OmniTester Corp., has joined Cirris System's sales and customer support team. 'Initially, Ray will primarily focus on taking care of existing Omni customers said Mr. Stringham, however long-term we see him as a valuable addition to our sales group.' Ray has over ten years of experience selling cable and harness testers with OmniTester Corp.
Cirris manufactures a complete line of cable, harness and backplane testers, with over 25,000 systems in use at more than 5000 customers worldwide. Cirris offers both low and high voltage bench top cable testers that test from 64 to 1024 test points. For larger assemblies they have PC based low voltage and high voltage testers that range from 256 to 32,000 and 160 to 20,000 points respectively. Cirris boasts both 2-wire and 4-wire testing capability for measuring resistance from .001ohm to 1Mohm. In addition to opens, shorts and mis-wires our products can test components such as resistors, diodes, capacitors, LED's, twisted pairs and more. High voltage testing ranges from 50 20 2800VDC and 2000VAC.
What Does This Mean for OmniTester Customers?
Although Cirris Systems will not be building or selling any new Omni equipment, we will attempt to service and support your existing Omni equipment for the foreseeable future. We hope to provide a suitable replacement/upgrade path for existing Omni customers with new Cirris equipment. With the introduction of our new CH2 high voltage analyzer we should have replacement equipment to meet the needs of most current Omni customers.

- Q. Can I buy a new Omni Tester?
- A. No. Cirris will support existing Omni testers to the extent possible, but will not be producing any new Omni Testers. With our broad product line means we hope to have acceptable replacement products for most current Omnitester customer's needs.
- Q. Can I still get spare parts for my Omni Tester?
- A. Cirris bought the entire existing inventory of Omnitester Corp. For parts that we have inventory on we can supply spares. To the extent possible we will build and stock critical spares. We expect that, as Omni customers upgrade or trade-in current Omni testers we may have used stock become available on certain boards that may be useful in maintaining other existing Omni systems.
- Q. What kind of trade-in or upgrade program is available?
- A. Cirris is anxious to work with existing Omnitester customers to satisfy both their short term and long term testing requirements. As mentioned we will, to the extent possible, keep existing Omni equipment up and running for as long as possible. Omni customers wishing to pursue an upgrade to new Cirris equipment will be offered some trade-in value as an incentive. The amount of trade-in value will be determined based on; original value, value of new equipment to be purchased and the potential value of the trade-in for spare parts for servicing other Omni products.
- Q. Is there a conversion program so that I can use my existing Omni programs on a replacement Cirris tester?
- A. None exists yet, but we certainly see this as a requirement to assist Omni customers in their transition to Cirris products. Please call us with your specific requirements in this area, and check back here often for updates as to our progress.
- Q. What about all of our Omni interface cables. Will we be able to use them on Cirris testers?
- A. This is another key feature to help Omni customers convert to Cirris products. For now we can work with you to create an intermediary solution to adapt your existing Omni interfaces to Cirris testers. Again, please call us with your specific requirements. We plan to have future versions of certain Cirris testers available with connector options available to accommodate existing Omni interfacing.
- Q. Does Cirris have a tester that provides the same test capabilities as my OmniTester system?
- A. See the table above for recommended Omni to Cirris options. There is one specific capability that some Omni customers are using that Cirris does not presently meet, but plans to in the future, and that is relay (external) energization. - Q. Will there be any new development on my existing OmniTester operating software?
- A. No, Cirris will not be building any new Omni Testers nor developing any new software for the Omni product line.
- Q. My Omni ISA slot computer is dead, can I get a new one, or get it repaired?
- A. Cirris has a few of the ISA motherboards available and is attempting to procure more of them. We will sell and service them as long as is possible.
