We have discovered some helpful online resources for making sense out of military connectors.   NASA has some easily accessed information at http://nepp.nasa.gov/npsl/Connectors/connector_type.htm.   Following the links you can find relevant specifications, graphical representations, and sources for the connectors they consider acceptable in their applications.

Spacecraft, a distributor of mil style circular connectors created a "bible" of circular connectors in Volume 1 of the "Encyclopedia of Connectors."   They have additional volumes on d-sub, rectangular, coax and many other connector families.   While these printed volumes can be pricy, Spacecraft has put volume one "Multi-Pin Cylindrical Connectors" on line.   It is accessible without cost but you must register for it.
